Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts

Country of installation Flag

The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, located in Norwich, UK, is an internationally renowned museum celebrated for its iconic architecture, designed by Norman Foster, and its world-class art collections. The building has also gained global recognition as the filming location for the Avengers headquarters in Marvel movies, further highlighting its distinctive and futuristic design.

Beyond its cultural significance, the Sainsbury Centre requires highly controlled environmental conditions to preserve artworks and ensure an optimal visitor experience.

The Challenge

Working within an existing infrastructure, the museum required an upgrade to its climate control system capable of:

  • seamlessly integrating with the existing installation
  • ensuring precise and stable temperature control
  • meeting strict low-noise requirements, essential for exhibition spaces
  • complying with architectural constraints that required a compact, custom-engineered solution

The key challenge was to deliver high performance without compromising the building’s structure, aesthetics, or the quiet atmosphere expected in a museum environment.

The Solution

To meet these requirements, Enex Technologies developed a fully custom-engineered solution, specifically designed to integrate with the existing system while addressing the unique constraints of the site.

The project was delivered in collaboration with trusted partner Cooltech, combining advanced engineering expertise with high-level customization capabilities.

System Configuration

The solution includes:

  • 4 remote condensers, each with a capacity of 146.85 kW
  • design suitable for operation with external static pressure above 150 Pa
  • extremely compact construction to fit within architectural limitations

Tailor-Made Engineering

Every component of the system was developed with a high degree of customization:

  • custom-designed fans, engineered to deliver optimal performance within a compact footprint
  • fully customized electrical panel, ensuring seamless control and integration with the existing system
  • engineering approach focused on non-invasive integration, preserving the original infrastructure

Acoustic Performance

Noise reduction was a critical requirement for this project:

  • sound levels of approximately 83 dB(A) at 1 meter
  • minimal acoustic impact in sensitive exhibition environments

Results

The new installation significantly enhances the operational performance of the Sainsbury Centre, delivering:

  • precise and stable climate control, essential for artwork preservation
  • seamless integration with the existing system, avoiding structural disruption
  • low acoustic impact, improving the overall visitor experience
  • optimized use of space, thanks to a compact, customized design

The solution also ensures high reliability and long-term operational continuity, key factors for a museum of this caliber.

Conclusion

This project highlights Enex Technologies’ ability to deliver fully customized solutions tailored to complex and highly constrained environments.

Through close collaboration with Cooltech and a flexible engineering approach, Enex successfully delivered a system that combines:

  • seamless integration
  • high performance
  • low-noise operation
  • respect for architectural constraints

This further reinforces Enex’s position as a trusted partner for technically demanding projects where performance, precision, and customization are critical.
